Lonza has announced the launch of its Rapid Media Prototyping Service (RaMP) — a solution designed to give biopharmaceutical companies faster access to custom liquid and powder media for screening, process confirmation, and early development.

Delivering Speed and Flexibility in Early Development

The new service enables the production of non-GMP powder batches ranging from 1 to 10 kg and liquid batches from 1 to 100 litres, with delivery achievable within 10 working days. This rapid turnaround is intended to help scientists accelerate project timelines, generate critical process data, and prepare effectively for GMP manufacturing.

RaMP directly addresses several well-known challenges that biopharmaceutical teams encounter during early development phases. These include extended lead times for custom prototype media, a limited availability of small-batch manufacturing options, and the operational need to align early formulation work with future manufacturing requirements — all of which can slow progress considerably.

Integrated Within Lonza’s End-to-End Media Solutions

RaMP forms part of Lonza’s broader end-to-end custom media and buffer solutions offering, which supports customers from initial media development and screening, through non-GMP prototyping, and onward to commercial GMP manufacturing. By connecting early formulation work with long-term scalability considerations, the service is positioned to simplify development workflows and support manufacturing readiness at each stage of a programme’s progression.

Omar Wahab, Vice President and Head of Bioprocessing at Lonza, explained the reasoning behind the launch: “Development teams are under pressure to generate data quickly, make informed process decisions and keep programmes moving towards the clinic. RaMP gives customers the possibility of rapid access to custom media in the quantities they need, when they need it. By connecting early screening and process confirmation with future GMP requirements, we help reduce scale-up risk, simplify technology transfer and support a more efficient path to commercialisation.”

Global Network Underpins the Service

The Rapid Media Prototyping Service is delivered through Lonza’s global media development and manufacturing network, combining rapid turnaround capabilities, flexible batch sizes, and specialised scientific expertise. Together, these elements are designed to help customers advance their biopharmaceutical development programmes with greater confidence while simultaneously preparing for scale-up and transition into GMP manufacturing.

The service reflects Lonza’s continued commitment as a CDMO to supporting its customers across the full development continuum — from the earliest stages of screening through to commercial-scale production. Further details regarding Lonza’s custom media capabilities, including development, prototyping, and manufacturing support, are available through the Lonza website.
