Genentech raised the final beam of its new Holly Springs, North Carolina manufacturing facility on August 18, marking the completion of the structural framework for what will become the company’s first East Coast manufacturing site in the United States.

The topping out ceremony represents an on-time construction milestone for Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, in the context of its approximately $2 billion investment in the Holly Springs project.

A Major Step in a Long-Term U.S. Commitment

The Holly Springs project was first announced in May 2025, followed by a groundbreaking in August 2025 and a subsequent expansion announcement in January 2026. The facility is part of a broader $50 billion commitment by Roche and Genentech toward research and development as well as manufacturing infrastructure across the United States.

That broader U.S. footprint currently spans 13 manufacturing sites, 15 research and development locations, and approximately 25,000 employees distributed across 24 locations in eight states.

The Genentech Holly Springs facility, once fully operational, is intended to produce next-generation treatments for metabolic conditions including obesity.

Technology and Innovation at the Core

The facility will be equipped with advanced biomanufacturing capabilities supported by automation, robotics, and contemporary digital manufacturing technologies. These elements are designed to enhance production efficiency, promote sustainability, and strengthen the domestic supply chain.

A notable feature of the facility’s technology infrastructure is an advanced digital twin — an AI-powered, data-driven model that simulates real-world operations and allows teams to test scenarios before physical implementation. This approach reflects Genentech’s investment in intelligent manufacturing systems across its operations.

Economic and Workforce Impact in North Carolina

The Holly Springs facility is expected to support more than 2,000 jobs in total. This includes over 500 high-wage manufacturing positions along with approximately 1,500 construction-related openings.

To build a workforce capable of meeting the facility’s technical demands, Genentech plans to partner with academic institutions in the Raleigh–Durham area. These partnerships aim to prepare local talent for careers in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, automation, and advanced biomanufacturing.

Holly Springs sits within the Raleigh–Durham region, which has been steadily growing as a biopharmaceutical manufacturing and innovation hub. Genentech has stated that the construction milestone reflects its confidence in the Holly Springs workforce, the surrounding community, and the region’s long-term potential.

The Genentech Holly Springs facility, when complete, will represent a significant addition to the company’s national manufacturing network and to North Carolina’s expanding life sciences landscape.
