METiS TechBio has announced a strategic collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company to research and develop next-generation lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based delivery solutions, leveraging METiS’s proprietary AI-driven platform to enable precise, tissue-specific delivery of therapeutic modalities.
Under the terms of the agreement, METiS is eligible to receive an upfront payment in the low double-digit millions of dollars, along with potential milestone payments of approximately $1.1 billion spanning development, regulatory, and commercial achievements. The company is also entitled to single-digit tiered royalties on annual net sales of any products that may result from the collaboration.
What Each Company Brings to the Table
METiS TechBio will contribute its proprietary AI-driven ionizable lipid discovery and optimization platform, known as AiLNP, to develop advanced LNP delivery tech aimed at improving tissue targeting and biodistribution of LNP-based systems. Eli Lilly, for its part, will contribute its established drug discovery, development, and commercialization capabilities to drive the collaboration forward.
Together, the companies intend to combine METiS’s generative and predictive AI capabilities for rational LNP design with Eli Lilly’s scientific and development infrastructure. The goal is to produce novel LNP architectures with improved tissue specificity, enhanced therapeutic performance, and broader applicability across multiple disease areas.
Lipid Nanoparticle Delivery Matters
Lipid nanoparticles have emerged as a central modality for delivering therapeutic payloads to target tissues and cells, forming the backbone of technologies ranging from mRNA vaccines to gene-editing therapies. As the pharmaceutical industry advances into increasingly complex therapeutic modalities, the ability to direct payloads precisely to intended tissues — while minimizing off-target exposure — has become a critical challenge in translating novel drug candidates into approved treatments.
METiS positions its AiLNP platform as a direct response to this challenge. The platform employs generative AI models, including one referred to internally as PhatGPT, to generate and optimize lipid candidates computationally rather than relying on conventional trial-and-error screening methods. This AI-driven drug delivery approach is central to the company’s value proposition in the collaboration.
Chris Lai, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of METiS TechBio, commented on the significance of the partnership: “Delivery remains a critical determinant of therapeutic success, particularly as the industry expands into increasingly sophisticated modalities. We are excited to collaborate with Lilly, a global leader in the discovery and development of innovative medicines. By combining METiS’ AI-powered platform with Lilly’s scientific expertise and development capabilities, we aim to unlock a new generation of tissue-targeted delivery technologies that have the potential to transform how medicines reach patients.”
Terms and Scope Still Partly Undisclosed
The full terms of the agreement have not been disclosed, and neither company has specified which disease areas or individual programs the collaboration will initially target. The agreement expands Eli Lilly’s growing engagement with AI-native biotechnology companies in the domain of delivery innovation, as pharmaceutical sponsors seek to extend LNP delivery tech beyond its foundational mRNA vaccine applications into areas such as gene therapies, RNA interference, and other emerging therapeutic modalities.
