AbbVie and Iambic have entered into a multiyear collaboration focused on AI drug discovery across three major therapeutic areas — immunology, neuroscience, and oncology. The partnership brings together Iambic’s molecular superintelligence platform and AbbVie’s established drug discovery expertise, with the shared goal of identifying and developing small molecule therapies with first-in-class and best-in-class potential.
Financial Terms And Agreement Structure
Under the terms of the agreement, Iambic will receive an upfront payment along with eligibility for success-based milestone payments and tiered royalties on net sales of any products arising from the collaboration. The companies have not disclosed the upfront payment amount, potential milestone value, or other specific financial terms.
Addressing A Complex Challenge In Pharmaceutical Research
The collaboration is centered on one of the more demanding aspects of pharmaceutical research — identifying molecules that demonstrate the biological activity and other essential characteristics required for successful drug development. In traditional small molecule discovery, scientists evaluate numerous properties of each drug candidate through separate cycles of computational analysis, chemical synthesis, and laboratory testing. This process is inherently time-consuming, in part because optimizing one molecular property can adversely affect another. Balancing multiple requirements — including efficacy, selectivity, and overall development suitability — remains a persistent challenge in molecular design.
Iambic’s platform is specifically designed to address this complexity by optimizing multiple molecular properties simultaneously. This capability allows researchers to evaluate a broader range of potential drug candidates and make better-informed decisions earlier in the discovery process, reducing the pursuit of unsuccessful candidates and shortening the time needed to identify promising molecules.
The Technologies At The Core Of The Collaboration
The collaboration will draw on two of Iambic’s core technologies — Enchant and NeuralPLexer — both of which integrate AI-driven molecular modeling with experimental data to support drug discovery and development.
Enchant v3: Next-Generation Multimodal Modeling
A central element of the partnership is Enchant v3, Iambic’s next-generation multimodal transformer model. This technology integrates biomedical data from multiple stages of the drug discovery process and enables researchers to test several drug design hypotheses in parallel. Enchant v3 has been trained on more than 6,000 molecular properties and is designed to improve prediction accuracy across the drug discovery and development continuum. By drawing on information from multiple biomedical data sources, the model aims to provide a more thorough understanding of the characteristics that influence a drug candidate’s performance, supporting more precise compound prioritization.
AbbVie’s Broader AI Integration Strategy
For AbbVie, this agreement expands its use of specialized artificial intelligence tools within its pharmaceutical research operations. The company has been integrating AI across its organization through AI@AbbVie, an enterprise-wide initiative focused on scientific innovation, operational efficiency, and improved decision-making. This initiative spans research and development, business operations, and other functions central to discovering, developing, and delivering medicines.
The partnership with Iambic will give AbbVie’s discovery scientists access to AI technologies specifically designed to address molecular design challenges. AbbVie intends to combine these capabilities with its scientific expertise in immunology, neuroscience, and oncology — three therapeutic areas that form a significant part of its drug development strategy. The collaboration is designed to provide researchers with additional computational tools to evaluate and prioritize potential treatments, rather than to replace laboratory research or scientific judgment.
Nicholas Donoghoe, M.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Business and Strategy Officer at AbbVie, commented on the collaboration: “We are excited about the purpose-built AI capabilities Iambic is bringing to our Discovery scientists. We believe AI will be a powerful catalyst for scientific innovation across AbbVie. By equipping our teams with fit-for-purpose AI solutions, we can accelerate discovery, expand what is possible in R&D and significantly advance our commitment to making a remarkable impact for patients.”
Jonathon Sedgwick, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Global Head of Discovery Research at AbbVie, added: “Combining Iambic’s platform with the drug-hunting expertise of AbbVie scientists can help us make more precise decisions about the molecules we pursue. The goal of our collaboration with Iambic is to design better molecules more efficiently and improve our probability of success, ultimately to deliver breakthrough medicines for patients sooner.”
Iambic’s Platform And Pipeline
For Iambic, the agreement provides an opportunity to apply its technology alongside an established pharmaceutical research organization while extending the reach of its AI platform beyond its internal programs. The clinical-stage company has developed an integrated approach that combines proprietary AI technology with automated, scalable chemistry and biology experimentation. Its platform is built to create a continuous relationship between computational predictions and experimental results, enabling information from laboratory work to directly inform subsequent molecular designs.
Iambic has demonstrated the capabilities of its platform by advancing a novel drug candidate into clinical development in approximately two years. The company has also built a diversified preclinical pipeline. Through this collaboration, Iambic will apply its molecular modeling and predictive technologies to additional drug discovery challenges in support of potential new therapies.
Tom Miller, Ph.D., Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Iambic, stated: “Iambic’s mission is to make better technology for better medicines — in our own hands and with partners. We are eager to bring Iambic’s molecular superintelligence platform to bear alongside AbbVie’s world-class team to address unmet patient need. We anticipate an impactful collaboration — for Iambic, for AbbVie, and for the patients we serve.”
The collaboration reflects both companies’ efforts to incorporate AI more extensively into pharmaceutical research. Their shared focus is on improving the efficiency of molecular design and increasing the likelihood that promising compounds advance successfully through development. The programs pursued under this partnership will target drug candidates with the potential to produce first-in-class medicines, which introduce entirely new therapeutic approaches, as well as best-in-class medicines, which seek to improve upon treatments that already exist.
