Watson Pharmaceuticals has introduced an authorized generic version of Fortamet as a part of an agreement with Shionogi.

The company began the shipment of generic Fortamet (metformin hydrochloride extended-release tablets). Fortamet is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower blood glucose for patients 17 years of age or older. Fortamet had combined brand and generic sales of approximately $82m for the twelve months ending 28 February 2012, according to IMS Health data.
