Gilead Sciences has officially opened a new 182,000-square-foot research centre at its Foster City headquarters in California, aimed at accelerating the development of medicines for challenging diseases. The five-storey facility is designed to expand the company’s capabilities in key therapeutic areas, including inflammation and oncology, while significantly strengthening its data science infrastructure. This project is a core component of a broader $32 billion investment strategy to advance biomedical innovation research, development, and manufacturing assets within the United States through 2030. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Gilead leadership, employees, and government officials, including U.S. Representative Kevin Mullin and California State Assembly member Diane Papan.

The new research hub is built to accommodate approximately 325 employees, including 260 laboratory scientists, and features adaptable laboratory spaces alongside collaborative shared technology platforms. According to Gilead Sciences chairman and CEO Daniel O’Day, the facility reflects a long-term commitment to American innovation. “We are in a moment of unprecedented opportunity in science and technology,” O’Day stated during the opening. “Our new research centre will help Gilead scientists make the most of that opportunity, delivering more breakthrough medicines faster. As part of our broader $32bn investment in the US, this new facility also reflects our long-term commitment to American innovation.”

Infrastructure Expansion and Strategic R&D Integration

The centre is engineered to co-locate diverse research disciplines, fostering an environment where advanced technologies and specialized expertise can intersect. Flavius Martin, executive vice president of research at Gilead Sciences, emphasized that the future of biomedical innovation research depends on this integration of science and technology. “This centre was designed to do exactly that,” Martin noted. “By co-locating key research disciplines and expanding our data science capabilities, we are strengthening the infrastructure needed to accelerate discovery and advance meaningful innovations.” The building is linked to an adjacent facility to ensure the efficient transfer of equipment and includes a central gathering space for internal collaboration.

This project is one of several major infrastructure developments underway at the Foster City campus. Gilead is also progressing with the construction of a Technical Development Center, expected to open in 2027, and a biologics facility scheduled for completion in 2029. These investments follow the company’s recent strategic expansion of its pipeline, including the $5 billion acquisition of Germany-based biotechnology firm Tubulis in May 2026, which focused on next-generation antibody-drug conjugates.

Sustainability and Environmental Design Standards

Reflecting the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility, the new facility is designed to achieve LEED Gold certification. Sustainability features integrated into the building include all-electric systems and an energy-efficient design architecture. The exterior landscaping utilizes native California plants to minimize water consumption and support local biodiversity. Currently, Gilead Sciences employs approximately 11,000 people across the United States, with more than 7,400 based in California and 4,700 specifically in the Bay Area, reinforcing the region’s role as a central hub for the company’s global research operations.
