Professor Andrea Sella, the science showman, whose theatrical chemistry demonstrations fill theatres up and down the country, will deliver a keynote address at Lab Innovations 2013, which takes place on 6 & 7 November 2013 at the NEC.

The Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at University College London will not only talk on the opening morning of the first day, as part of the Royal Society of Chemistryโ€™s conference at the show, but will also take part in a highly contentious Chemistry World Panel Debate which Lab Innovations is hosting.

While the topic for the debate has yet to be agreed, the need to attract more talent into science will probably not be far from the agenda given Sellaโ€™s considerable zeal at communicating science to school children and the Lab Innovations showโ€™s own research.Conducted in May among 112 science-based organisations within the UK, the research found that 91% think more needs to be done to excite young people about science and 23% believe a lack of skilled workforce is inhibiting their success.

Sella is one of the UKโ€™s loudest chemistry cheerleaders, dedicating more than half his working time to science communication. ย In the past he has said:

โ€˜Most people that go into science โ€“ go into music; go into any subject โ€“ feel that the light came on for them really quite early. Trying to get students to go into science when you are talking to them at 16 or 17 is too late. Intervention has to be much earlier.โ€™

Commenting on Andrea Sellaโ€™s involvement in the show, Jake Morrison, Lab Innovations Event Manager, said:

โ€œI think there will be some really interesting questions from the floor when Andrea Sella takes to the podium, not least because lab professionals that we have researched are clearly worried about the talent they have going into their organisations.

โ€œAndrea draws tremendous crowds wherever he speaks. His presence in the RSC theatre at Lab Innovations ย will be a brilliant addition to whatโ€™s already shaping up to be a huge show. ย  It really highlights how determined we are to make Lab Innovations a major must-see destination for all those in the ย laboratory community.โ€

Lab Innovations is the UKโ€™s only event dedicated to laboratory equipment, technology and services. ย The show is supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry, Campden BRI and Gambica and its attendees are lab managers and scientists working within the chemical, life sciences, food & beverage industries plus those in research institutions.

In addition to Andrea Sellaโ€™s keynote and the Chemistry World Panel Debate, Lab Innovations 2013 will feature throughout its two days, a Royal Society of Chemistry Conference, Campden BRI technical workshops, a UKAS Pavilion plus a packed exhibition hall featuring all the latest product and service innovations from over 100 ย supply companies.

Lab Innovations 2013 is on 6 & 7 November 2013, at Birminghamโ€™s NEC. For more information and to register for free please visit www.easyFairs.com/LABINNOVATIONS.
