Venturing into chemicals in France

Invest in Grenoble-Isère and Rhône Valley – ACHEMA 2015 Hall 9.2, stand D41 Adisseo, Hexcel, Vencorex, Arkema… major international chemical industry stakeholders are investing more than a billion euros in Grenoble-Isère and the Rhône Valley (France).

Proof of the region’s attraction for industry at all levels: large industrial platforms with advanced chemical technology, universities and research centers close at hand, in an exceptional setting.

Grenoble, France, June 10th, 2015 – €500 million for the Roches-Roussillon-Osiris platform, €500 million for Grenoble and Jarrie Chemical Parks, plus €130 million to develop the responsible, multimodal INSPIRA industrial area… In all, more than a billion euros is being invested by the Grenoble and Rhône Valley platforms from 2012 to 2017.

Situated midway along the strategic North to South route through Europe, these sites represent 5000 jobs in the chemical industry, and have key assets for industrial development:

· Long-established mastery of manufacturing processes, high innovation capacity, optimal reuse and pooling of production and energy, exemplary services and industrial ecology organization, and real expertise in security and environmental management.

· Presence of research centers, universities and Axelera (Rhône-Alpes Chemistry and Environment competitive cluster).

· Access to multimodal transport (highways, railways, river routes).

Success stories

On the OSIRIS platform, Adisseo, a world leader in animal nutrition and French subsidiary of a Chinese group, has invested €100 million for an MMP production unit and Hexcel, the American worldleader in composites, is building its first fully integrated plant in Europe to produce carbon fiber, a €200 million project. Suez Environment has installed a biomass recovery unit to supply the site with steam (€18 million).

South of Grenoble, Vencorex and Arkema are modernizing their chloride production facilities with new membrane electrolysis shops. Vencorex is also developing its specialty isocyanates. Plus, the Grenoble Chemical Park has high development potential in the recovery of hydrogen, a gas with a promising future in new energy technologies.

“All of these industrial development projects confirm that the Isère area chemical platforms meet the requirements for setting up business under the best of conditions for competitiveness, with the pooling of flows, energy and co-products, and regulatory risk management capability. The projects also confirm the Isère area’s industrial attraction in a highly competitive international environment.

Hexcel looked into more than 70 sites around the world before choosing Grenoble-Isère and the Roches Roussillon platform,” reveals Joëlle Seux, AEPI Executive Director.

Invest in Grenoble-Isere, France–AEPI assists all companies with projects to set up businesses on the platforms, in connection with chemistry and the environment.
