How peer review works

STEP 1 Editorial screening

The editorial office checks scope, structure, originality and ethical compliance. Submissions outside scope are returned quickly so authors can look elsewhere without delay.

STEP 2 Reviewer assignment

A handling editor from the editorial board assigns at least two independent reviewers with relevant subject expertise. Reviewer and author identities are withheld from each other.

STEP 3 Review and revision

Reviewers assess methodology, evidence and clarity. Authors receive the full reports with a decision of accept, minor revision, major revision or decline.

STEP 4 Acceptance and publication

Accepted articles are copy-edited, typeset, assigned a DOI and published open access under a Creative Commons licence.
